Pirate Treasure in Campus Village

Pirate treasure to be found scattered in Campus Village! At least, there was a treasure hunt on November 3 if you went to RA Adrian Tripp’s event of the 1007-1009 cluster. Everyone who came to the event was split into teams consisting of three to four people. Each person was given the same initial clue. This first clue told us to travel to Hollywood and look for a clue having to do with LGB and their Allies.

After players found the Hollywood cluster, they found pamphlets on the RA’s door for the LGBT Resource Center. Behind these pamphlets were the second clues, leading to another cluster. Each clue led players to another cluster, where the next clue could be found behind informational pamphlets. In this way, players got to learn about diverse campus resources while going on the scavenger hunt! The scavenger hunt took teams through the pirate cluster, Hollywood, the out of this world cluster, the Care Bear cluster, the Ninja Turtles cluster, and many other places. It was a fun way to spend the evening, even if it did mean suspiciously running up to the doors of RAs.

Running around to different clusters was not the only aspect of the scavenger hunt. There was a second part involving answering questions. When teams received their initial clues, a sheet of questions were also given to them. These consisted of diverse questions about different cultures, and teams were required to answer these questions using any means. Teams could either break apart, having some people go on the hunt and some people work on the questions, or could do both together. My team chose to go on the hunt first all together and then to work on the questions. The questions included “what is the current year in the Jewish calendar,” “who was the first black woman to be elected to state legislature in the United States,” and “what are the two most common religions in Ethiopia?” Questions ranged from learning about other races and religions to other countries and even resources here at UCI.

After getting through the questions using Google, Wikipedia, and the UCI website, my team rushed back to our pirate captain (Adrian) to turn in our answers. We had done it! We completed the treasure hunt! Too bad we were too slow and lost. There are no hard feelings though, because we had a good time and learned a lot about other cultures.
