Scalzi has put up a nice entry on his blog, The Whatever. It’s the chronology of the stories in the Old Man’s War universe.
His new book also came out today, Zoe’s Tale.

Merlin, Chronicles of Amber
This dream was basically based on some books I’ve been reading. You can skip the next paragraph if you want to see my comments on the books without reading my dream.
I had a dream the other night that my father (who was not my real father) was going away on business to either Egypt or Las Vegas. We (some friends and I) wanted to go with him so we cast a spell on our car to follow him. My friend wanted a girl across the street to come too so I called her and invited her, which was weird because I hated her roommate. She said okay. When it was time to leave, the car started flying to the place my dad was at. When we got there, we found the place to be really cool, and we wanted to be able to come back to it but knew we wouldn’t remember nor be able to get to it easily. I had an idea. I went to the library to talk to Merlin so he could make me a trump of the place. I started yelling out his name, realizing that most people would think I was crazy and talking about the fictional Merlin from King Arthur, etc, not the real one (who is, indeed, fictional). I couldn’t find him, but some fat little kid started making fun of me, saying that Merlin wasn’t real and magic didn’t exist. I floated in the air and choked him without touching him until he cried. And that was the end of the dream.
I guess I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the novels. The Amber Chronicles, starting with The Nine Princes In Amber by Roger Zelazny. It’s a ten book series with two five book cycles (one being the original and the other written at a later time) about Amber, the one true city. Amber casts shadows, which are basically dimensions. For instance, we live in shadow. The series is about the royal family of Amber who have the ability to walk through shadow. There’s a lot of magic artifacts in it, magic casting in the second cycle, plotting, family intrigue, back stabbing, and a hell of a lot of sword fighting. It’s very good if you like sci-fi / fantasy. All ten novels can be found in The Great Book of Amber.
Science Library Looks Like a Vagina
I heard that the Science Library looks like a vagina.
Anyways, I doubt if WebPageless will really come back anytime soon. I guess this is semi-permanent. Cox blocks all incoming ports entirely. It’s like my computer doesn’t exist on the Internet. In better news, Cox has at least made the speeds go up to normal DSL/cable speeds. I also tried using the AntWeb. To set that up, I had to learn how to VPN into the school. But after setting it up, I found that pages on it are only accessible to people on the UCI network.
I gave up the Start Menu and Explorer a long time ago (about a year now). But I had used Black Box menus or BBIcons. Well, I gave it all up in trade for Google Desktop Search. I works really well. I use it to launch all my applications and everything. Good program. Good organization, that Google. I loves them.
My Palm Tungsten C died completely today. The screen is totally fucked up. Like Chopsticks. That really sucks. I kinda depend on it. I’m gonna sync to my dad’s Palm to at least get my financing info off of it.
I got about a standard deviation above the mean on the CSE 21 midterm. Did well on both projects. My Kalah AI was the best in the class. The average on my CSE 31L midterm was 54%. I got 97%. I’ve aced all my 31L labs, and have done well in Classics. Turned in a concert report on Tuesday. It went well, I think.
Last weekend was cool. On Friday, gem and I went to LNP. I wore a robe for Halloween and got in early. I never had got in early before. Then we rented Chamber of Secrets and bought Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. Saturday we played video games basically. Then gem, Jon, Gabby, Andy and I went to see Nnenna Freelon at the Jazz Bakery in LA. I thought it was a pretty good show. Afterwards we came back to my apartment, drank, and watched the Grudge. Gabby was too scared to watch. She kept hiding. Patrick kept scaring her. It was great. Chris was too talkative during the movie. Andy was a bitch, and we’re never watching a movie that matters with him again. Sunday gem and I worked on our labs. Christine came over, but we didn’t really get to do much. That night, gem, Jon, Gabby, and I went to Knott’s Scary Farm. It was a lot of fun, except Jon and Gabby fought a bit. But Gabby got over her fear of the big rollercoasters – kind of. Anyways, she went on it. And we got on quickly because Jon used a wheelchair.
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is a really fun game. I thought the chapters would suck, but they don’t really get in the way of playing.
I finished reading Starship Troopers again. It’s so much better now than when I read it in highschool or junior high. I love Heinlein. And I love that book. Totally awesome.
On Tuesday (I think) I hung out with gem, Allison, and Lauren. It was fun. Afterwards Lauren went home, and the three of us went to Denny’s to eat. Great fun! I love friends.
I hadn’t talked to Kalin in a long time, but I’m chatting with him now. Good ol’ AIM.
My mom’s birthday was the 1st, and Pete’s is the 3rd. Happy birthdays! gem and I went out to dinner with them tonight to an Italian restaurant. I had the rigotoni, and it was great.
gem’s making Gryffindor scarves for us for the Goblet of Fire release.
Tomorrow I have a history of jazz midterm at one. I feel so unprepared. It has nothing to do with computers or math. Ah! But I’ll probably do alright.

Harry Potter
gem convinced me to try Harry Potter last week. I began with the first in the series, and as it turned out, I rather liked it. I’m now in the 5th book, reading one every three days (which I happened to notice be the exact rate while reading the 4th). The author includes a lot of plot twists. I’m sure my ficitonal writing teacher wouldn’t like it, heh. There are some things that seem repetitious (it’s the end of the year again, Harry’s gotta do something great now, right?), but the novels are still really fun to read. One and a half more books left to catch up.
Venus on the Half-Shell
I just finished reading Venus on the Half-Shell. It was great fun to read. I’m reminded of stories by Douglas Adams although this lacked as much depth in its plot. The book has a lot of sex in it, and was once considered pornographic, but it wasn’t really erotic. There’s just sexual humor thrown in. Check it out if you liked the Hitchhiker trilogy.
Revenge of the Sith
Revenge of the Sith the novel is much better than the movie. Now I actually loved the movie, but the acting was just horrible. The book offers a chance to see the powerful events unfold without the bad acting getting in the way. Of course, it also offers much better character development. Check it out.
Review of Ataxia Canto II: Freshman
Here Joseph tells of how he met Her. He says that met Her during IDP. He partnered with Murat and they worked with Brannon and Her. They worked together at school for weeks, and before IDP was due, they met at Her house to complete the project. He says that he didn’t talk to Murat much, but enjoyed talking politics and other issues with Brannon and Her. After the project finished, they continued to talk politics occasionally but not very often. He says they were more associates than friends.
This chapter is obiviously important because it shows how Joseph met Her. Other than that, it isn’t very important. Nothing out of the ordinary happened during this part of his life. It does, however, set the stage for the next year of his life.
Review of Ataxia Canto I: Idealism
In this chapter, Joseph explains his ideal woman. He says that this is not a standard he compares every woman to; it is only an ideal. He says that most persons want their children to have their own traits. To get these traits, a person would need to mate with a similar person. He states the races he’d prefer, from most ideal to least ideal, are Apache, other Indian races (Navajo, Sioux… Cherokee), Hispanics (Peruvians… Mexicans), certain Asians (Filipinos, some types of Japanese, Chinese), non-white Europeans (black Irish, Portugese), other Asians, sub-Saharan Africans (lightest to darkest), and finally, Aryans (WASPs). His ideal woman would be his height with black hair, brown eyes, reddish brown skin, wide hips, and large breasts. He’d prefer slightly overweight to underweight. He’d prefer a devout Catholic but would also be happy with a liberal Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Jew, or a Hindu. She should be liberal and definitely not extreme in either political direction.
I think this chapter very clearly defines his ideal woman in many traits. He begins by saying that most men would like a woman who is similar to himself, and from his description of the ideal, this is true. His ideal woman is very clearly sharing many of his own characteristics (of course, not the large breasts part). Joseph mentions that it’s odd that She doesn’t fit many of these categories. I find it odd too, and perhaps it’ll be further explained in later chaptors. I’d like to see more about his ideal in other aspects though. What kind of personality? How educated? What hobbies or interests? Hard working or stay at home? Follows all the rules or likes to get wild once in a while? Despite wanting to see more, this chapter can give one a very clear idea of who Joseph would and wouldn’t want to be with.
Update: Joseph says that his ideal woman would be able to intelligently hold a conversation with him. She should be moderately knowledgeable in history and politics, and he’d prefer her to be better in the fields he is lacking in. He does not have an ideal hobby, interest, or personality for her.
