Found a restaurant called Olive Branch in the Bonaventure. We got a gyro, hummus, chicken, rice, salad, and sprite for $18. Then I hung out in the room looking through the schedule and watching a tv show called Burn Notice on USA. It was interesting. Before bed I put everything that looked interesting to me in my phone’s calendar. Ready to go!

Day 0
Got to the Bonaventure around 1:00. They let us check in despite our check-in time being 3:00. Hung out in the room and acted pervy towards William for a while. AX registration started at 3:00, but we got there around 3:30. The line was huge and in the sun. Apparently the computers were down. Ethan said something got unplugged. We played Contact (verbal game, not DS) the whole time. So much fun!
Got badges by 5:30 or so and then had to wait in line for AMV tickets until 7:30. We had to pick up William’s ticket for him because he was too good for us! (He met friends for dinner.) The guy in front of me asked the three girls from the AniMaid Cafe for hugs. He actually wants to pay $25 to have dinner and play games with girls dressed as maids. Food better be good.

Westin Bonaventure
We’re at the Westin Bonaventure! Time for AX fun!
Tokidoki 360
Today at Happy Six’s grand opening, Simone Legno, the artist behind
tokidoki, autographed my Xbox 360! He also drew Adios, my favorite
tokidoki character! I bet I’m the only person with a tokidoki
personalized 360! A photographer working for Happy Six took my picture
with the 360, and a lot of other guests were impressed and excited
about it, including men and women, young and my age.
William got a penguin drawn on his tablet PC. gem got a Godzilla
(which Simone was surprised she knew about because it’s new) on her
sushi themed tokidoki skateboard, and Gabby got a picture on her sushi
skateboard too!
Anime Expo 2008
I just got back from Anime Expo in Los Angeles, and it was great! This year I went to the opening ceremony, the AMV contest, AX Idol, a signing by NIS character designers, a NIS America panel, Last Comic Standing, a David Hayter panel, a David Hayter signing, Whose Line Is It Anime?, and the closing ceremony. And I spent less than $50 on merchandise!
We stayed at the Omni hotel, which was only a few minutes away from the convention center via shuttle. Shuttles were free for us. The hotel was very nice, especially at 60 degrees the whole time, but I lost my extra battery for my camera. I’m pretty sure it was dead (broken dead) so it wasn’t a big loss. Antonio said he may have lost boxers and jeans. Duncan, who was in a different room, lost a pair of glasses. Justin, also in the other room, lost a pair of boxers as well. That doesn’t just seem like coincidence. Are the cleaning people stealing things? Together with the fact that there was a used tampon in between the mattress and box-spring of Justin’s bed (they got a free upgrade for that), I’m not sure I’d want to stay there again despite it seeming very nice.
This was the first year that I went to the opening ceremony. It was fun, but not too terribly exciting. I did mingle quite a bit with The World Ends With You, although it took me days to realize that the reason why I couldn’t see other players was because I was using the PAL version.
The AMV contest was quite long, but a lot of fun. There are definitely some AMVs I’d like to look up and watch some more, and they made me more interested in a few anime series. None of my choices won, but oh well.
AX Idol was really awesome. Last year I thought it was really boring, but this year, almost every contestant had a lot of talent. Half of the people were competing in voice acting, and the other half were singing. It was really amazing. One guy, who had his head shaved except for a short triangle-shaped mohawk, sang Rain, from Cowboy Bebop. I have a nice picture of him courtesy of “JUB” via Pictochat!

Last Comic Standing is a stand-up competition. It was funny and very enjoyable, but some of the “comedians” were quite bad. A lot of them told jokes like “I’m a minority…it’s hard to like anime when you’re Black and/or Hispanic, food stamps, Home Depot etc.” I’m glad these people can joke around with their own culture’s negative stereotypes, but seriously, enough. The two finalists were also pretty bad >_>. I guess the audience was stupid because they’re the ones were judging. There were judges there to comment, but they didn’t choose the winners. Do you know who the coolest judge was? Man-Faye! It was awesome seeing him! Whose Line Is It Anime? is an improv show in which everything is anime themed. Terribly bad. It did make me miss Live Nude People that much more though.
We hung out at the NIS booth a bit, and I got my picture taken with a giant Prinny! Phoenix was funny as always too. I bought a Disgaea picture and got autographs from two different character designers that work at NIS. I also went to a NIS panel where they talked about Disgaea 3 and A Witch’s Tale, their new upcoming games.
I also went to a David Hayter panel. He was the voice of Lupin in Lupin the Third, the voice of Snake in the MGS series, and the screenplay writer of X-Men. It was really entertaining. I tried getting his autograph at multiple sessions but kept not making them. Finally on the last day, I managed to get his autograph.
I also went to the closing ceremony, and it was pretty boring. We did go to Little Tokyo to eat though, where the food was delicious!
I can’t wait for next year!
Pervasive Persuasion
Three LA artists came together on the 12th to discuss their pervasive art. Simone Legno, Gary Baseman, and Tim Biskup discussed how their works and how they got started. The term “pervasive art” describes art that is in everyday life – clothing, accessories, toys, etc. All three artists have vinyl toys, which have only recently been considered art.
The event took place at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. The museum was holding an exhibit called
Corteo
I saw Cirque du Soleil: Corteo today. It was really amazing. A clown imagines his own death and subsequent funeral. A lot of it was really funny, but the amazing acrobatics stand out even more. There’s really no way I can put into words what I saw tonight except possibly “exceptional.”
Simone Legno Signing
On the 8th, Saturday, I went to a Simone Legno signing party in Los Angeles. Simone Legno is the artist behind tokidoki. I was nervous about not fitting in with the people there. It seems strange to be a man going to a signing of an artist primarily know for creating purses, yes? Of course, I was going with a girl, but it still seemed odd.
Actually, I really enjoyed the whole event, including standing in line and talking about tokidoki with other fans. I find that I know a lot more about the topic than I previously though. It was at a store called Mobius, which I should definitely link to if only for the fact that they tried to make loyal customers out of us, and I live too far to frequent it. The place was very cool. It had a nice, open feel to it and sold a variety of products, most of which were vinyl figures. In was cold out so they let us move the line inside where they also brought us various chips, fruit punch, green tea, and red wine.
The first attendees we met were a mom and daughter in a parking lot. I hate parking in Los Angeles. It’s always in some hard-to-use pay lot. We walked around together confused as to who or how to pay. Eventually some guy asked if we needed help in broken English. I wish I knew Korean. When we explained that we wanted to park there for a maximum of four hours, he kept telling us six o’clock. Turns out, parking is free until six, and before then you can’t pay ahead of time. Did I mention I hate parking in LA?
The woman we met had a poster she bought for her daughter, but she didn’t tell her daughter. The girl though it was just a big blank paper in a poster tube that her mom was going to get signed. She was in for a nice surprise. We also met some cool people behind us in line too. They apparently knew each other from previous signings.
I was ninth or tenth in line and got there an hour and a half early. It was a shorter line than I expected. While there, we collected fliers and the like. We also purchased a Mozzarella figure. Beforehand, in preparation and/or hype, we bought tokidoki stickers, as well as a new Guitar Hero guitar faceplate because gem wanted mine.
Anyways, gem went first. She got the faceplate autographed. She wanted Mozzarella drawn on it, holding a guitar instead of a gun, but Simone forgot and drew the gun in anyways. It was pretty awesome watching him do such skilled drawings so quickly, even if he forgot that detail. He made it up to her by drawing Adios on it as well, this time with the guitar. It’ll definitely look cool on a guitar! Before leaving, gem gave him a robot panda she made out of felt and “fluff” stuffing. I think he really liked it. He collects robot toys, and gem knew this.
I first asked him to sign the Mozzarella. He drew a Latte on the back of her in full color. It was an amazing drawing. After asking if I had anything else he wanted me to sign, I gave him a blank Labbit and asked if he’d put it in a cactus suit like many of his characters had. He laughed and said he’d try. Well, I don’t know if he thought he’d fail or something, because it looks gorgeous. What’s especially cool is that we now have a Simone Legno autographed / sketched Labbit and a Nightwish autographed Labbit.
Long story short, I always thought it art was pretty cool, but I appreciate it much more now. It’s also interesting that I never noticed just how urban-influenced his style is. It just made me realize how unique his art is in that it’s a combination of American urban style with Japanese animation. Next time he has a signing close to Irvine, I’ll go again.
Science Library Looks Like a Vagina
I heard that the Science Library looks like a vagina.
Anyways, I doubt if WebPageless will really come back anytime soon. I guess this is semi-permanent. Cox blocks all incoming ports entirely. It’s like my computer doesn’t exist on the Internet. In better news, Cox has at least made the speeds go up to normal DSL/cable speeds. I also tried using the AntWeb. To set that up, I had to learn how to VPN into the school. But after setting it up, I found that pages on it are only accessible to people on the UCI network.
I gave up the Start Menu and Explorer a long time ago (about a year now). But I had used Black Box menus or BBIcons. Well, I gave it all up in trade for Google Desktop Search. I works really well. I use it to launch all my applications and everything. Good program. Good organization, that Google. I loves them.
My Palm Tungsten C died completely today. The screen is totally fucked up. Like Chopsticks. That really sucks. I kinda depend on it. I’m gonna sync to my dad’s Palm to at least get my financing info off of it.
I got about a standard deviation above the mean on the CSE 21 midterm. Did well on both projects. My Kalah AI was the best in the class. The average on my CSE 31L midterm was 54%. I got 97%. I’ve aced all my 31L labs, and have done well in Classics. Turned in a concert report on Tuesday. It went well, I think.
Last weekend was cool. On Friday, gem and I went to LNP. I wore a robe for Halloween and got in early. I never had got in early before. Then we rented Chamber of Secrets and bought Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. Saturday we played video games basically. Then gem, Jon, Gabby, Andy and I went to see Nnenna Freelon at the Jazz Bakery in LA. I thought it was a pretty good show. Afterwards we came back to my apartment, drank, and watched the Grudge. Gabby was too scared to watch. She kept hiding. Patrick kept scaring her. It was great. Chris was too talkative during the movie. Andy was a bitch, and we’re never watching a movie that matters with him again. Sunday gem and I worked on our labs. Christine came over, but we didn’t really get to do much. That night, gem, Jon, Gabby, and I went to Knott’s Scary Farm. It was a lot of fun, except Jon and Gabby fought a bit. But Gabby got over her fear of the big rollercoasters – kind of. Anyways, she went on it. And we got on quickly because Jon used a wheelchair.
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is a really fun game. I thought the chapters would suck, but they don’t really get in the way of playing.
I finished reading Starship Troopers again. It’s so much better now than when I read it in highschool or junior high. I love Heinlein. And I love that book. Totally awesome.
On Tuesday (I think) I hung out with gem, Allison, and Lauren. It was fun. Afterwards Lauren went home, and the three of us went to Denny’s to eat. Great fun! I love friends.
I hadn’t talked to Kalin in a long time, but I’m chatting with him now. Good ol’ AIM.
My mom’s birthday was the 1st, and Pete’s is the 3rd. Happy birthdays! gem and I went out to dinner with them tonight to an Italian restaurant. I had the rigotoni, and it was great.
gem’s making Gryffindor scarves for us for the Goblet of Fire release.
Tomorrow I have a history of jazz midterm at one. I feel so unprepared. It has nothing to do with computers or math. Ah! But I’ll probably do alright.
