Well, it’s been a while since I’ve posted a real entry. The night before Thanksgiving I partied at Jon’s. Everyone was pretty fucked up the next morning. I was the only person who didn’t throw up. After getting a couple hours of sleep, I went to my aunt’s house for Thanksgiving. It was fun, and I spent the weekend doing basically nothing. Saturday night, I went to see the Estrada Brothers with gem, Jon, and Gabby for my music class. We got lost and they didn’t hold our reservations when we were a half hour late, so we sat outside before getting bored of it and leaving.
Then we had 10th week. The first few days were uneventful. Wednesday night, I spent the whole night working on my concert report. We didn’t really start studying for the music final until Thursday morning right before the test. It went okay. Afterwards we worked on our last CSE 23 project. Neither gem nor I finished. She was really close though. She ended up getting half credit, and I got a little less. We didn’t study at all for our Classics final on Friday, but we both did okay.
The weekend before finals week, gem and I spent it at my mom’s. We really didn’t get much studying done. Monday came, and it felt like the 23 final killed me. The 31L final went okay. For the next couple days I helped gem in 31 and worked on the 31L final project. I didn’t get it done, but we ended up getting a lot of points anyways.
Then we started getting our scores back. As it turns out, they could tell we didn’t hear shit at the concert, and the three of us each got an F. There went 10% of each of our grades. But oh well. I ended up getting a B- in music, A- in classics, A- in 23, and an A in 31L. I lost my 4.0 in the School of Engineering, but I’m only down to 3.948, which isn’t so bad. Maybe due to the lack of precision I can get that back to 4.000, heh.

Science Library Looks Like a Vagina

I heard that the Science Library looks like a vagina.
Anyways, I doubt if WebPageless will really come back anytime soon. I guess this is semi-permanent. Cox blocks all incoming ports entirely. It’s like my computer doesn’t exist on the Internet. In better news, Cox has at least made the speeds go up to normal DSL/cable speeds. I also tried using the AntWeb. To set that up, I had to learn how to VPN into the school. But after setting it up, I found that pages on it are only accessible to people on the UCI network.
I gave up the Start Menu and Explorer a long time ago (about a year now). But I had used Black Box menus or BBIcons. Well, I gave it all up in trade for Google Desktop Search. I works really well. I use it to launch all my applications and everything. Good program. Good organization, that Google. I loves them.
My Palm Tungsten C died completely today. The screen is totally fucked up. Like Chopsticks. That really sucks. I kinda depend on it. I’m gonna sync to my dad’s Palm to at least get my financing info off of it.
I got about a standard deviation above the mean on the CSE 21 midterm. Did well on both projects. My Kalah AI was the best in the class. The average on my CSE 31L midterm was 54%. I got 97%. I’ve aced all my 31L labs, and have done well in Classics. Turned in a concert report on Tuesday. It went well, I think.
Last weekend was cool. On Friday, gem and I went to LNP. I wore a robe for Halloween and got in early. I never had got in early before. Then we rented Chamber of Secrets and bought Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. Saturday we played video games basically. Then gem, Jon, Gabby, Andy and I went to see Nnenna Freelon at the Jazz Bakery in LA. I thought it was a pretty good show. Afterwards we came back to my apartment, drank, and watched the Grudge. Gabby was too scared to watch. She kept hiding. Patrick kept scaring her. It was great. Chris was too talkative during the movie. Andy was a bitch, and we’re never watching a movie that matters with him again. Sunday gem and I worked on our labs. Christine came over, but we didn’t really get to do much. That night, gem, Jon, Gabby, and I went to Knott’s Scary Farm. It was a lot of fun, except Jon and Gabby fought a bit. But Gabby got over her fear of the big rollercoasters – kind of. Anyways, she went on it. And we got on quickly because Jon used a wheelchair.
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is a really fun game. I thought the chapters would suck, but they don’t really get in the way of playing.
I finished reading Starship Troopers again. It’s so much better now than when I read it in highschool or junior high. I love Heinlein. And I love that book. Totally awesome.
On Tuesday (I think) I hung out with gem, Allison, and Lauren. It was fun. Afterwards Lauren went home, and the three of us went to Denny’s to eat. Great fun! I love friends.
I hadn’t talked to Kalin in a long time, but I’m chatting with him now. Good ol’ AIM.
My mom’s birthday was the 1st, and Pete’s is the 3rd. Happy birthdays! gem and I went out to dinner with them tonight to an Italian restaurant. I had the rigotoni, and it was great.
gem’s making Gryffindor scarves for us for the Goblet of Fire release.
Tomorrow I have a history of jazz midterm at one. I feel so unprepared. It has nothing to do with computers or math. Ah! But I’ll probably do alright.

Catching Up

It’s been a while since I’ve posted last.
We were told we could move in Monday the 26th at 8 am, but they later changed that to 3 pm. When we showed up to move in, they said we could put our stuff on the patio, but they still had to shampoo the carpet. They finished that by 5 and said it would take 4 hours to dry. It took a lot longer. I ended up sleeping on the tile floor in the kitchen on top of some cushions. Over the next few days things were still getting set up. They apparently still had some electrical things to do as well as give us our appliances. By Wednesday most of the stuff was fine though. I had most of my stuff with me but no furniture. For the first few days I slept on Will’s couch. By mid/end week, I had my loft bed and new matress. Patrick and Colin did most of the building.
Will’s dad was here a lot working on things. He helped a lot. On his last night, he took Will, Patrick, Colin, and me out to Ruth’s Chris steakhouse. It was amazing. We weren’t expecting it so we were completely underdressed too. The food was great though. After dinner, Will’s dad asks us all to guess how much the bill came to. I guessed $340. Then he pulls out a $100 bill and says that whoever was closest wins it. The bill was $339.95, and he gave me $100. Pretty awesome dinner.
On Friday our couch was delivered. It’s a black leather L-shaped sofa that’s full sized on each arm of the L. Each end is a recliner, but they brought us two left ends and have yet to come bring us the right piece. But it’s really comfortable. That day Dad and James came down. The three of us met gem at the Spectrum to see Serenity. There were a few things I didn’t like about the movie, but all in all, it was excellent. I really hope Firefly lives on. Dad and James really enjoyed it as well, and although she wasn’t as impressed, gem had fun too. After the movie, Dad left, and gem, James, and I had dinner at CPK before leaving James at Mom’s place.
Over the weekend we set up our apartment more. By this time we had all of our appliances – barbecue, George Foreman Grill, blender, coffee/expresso machine, toaster, microwave, etc. The big tv I got from my mom was all set up and on a stand in the living room. Patrick and I both bought a floor lamp for our room. In the living room there’s one normal floor lamp and one that’s the asian paper-box-around-some-lights thing. But we bought the wrong bulbs. I bought a corner desk to go under my loft bed and a matching drawer unit that sits next to the desk and is the same height. I wanted to get another desk too, but Ikea was out of them so I’ll have to go back. That’ll give me a lot of desk space. I also bought a tall slim bookcase to put next to my bed. It doesn’t hold much, but I can put my tv on top to use while I’m in bed. I also bought a normal size bookcase for, well, books. It’s nice to finally have all my books put away rather than in a box or shoved haphazardly on a shelf.
Today are dining room table came. It’s a gorgeous metal frame with glass top. Rather than have inserts that make the table top bigger, on two of the sides you can reach under and slide out and pull up to lock into place a glass piece. This makes the table really huge if pulled out on both sides. It came with six black chairs and a matching glass top credenza. Will bought a cocktail table, but it’s not ready to be picked up yet.
I’ve seen gem a lot obviously. I have three of my four classes with her. I’ve seen her roommates a little but not much. And obviously (again), I’ve seen a lot of Will and Patrick. Colin’s been over a lot too. Andy I see most days at school which is cool. I’ve seen Jimmy, Chris, and Vince a little, and Kevin and D’Ann once or twice. Jon also lives not-so-far-away in Stanford court although I really haven’t seen too much of him or Gabby. I noticed that Jasmine was in my class today and talked to her a little. She’s in Dartmouth too so I’d like to go visit sometime soon. Judy called me today as well for computer help (her problem’s fixed now), and we’re gonna try to meet up tomorrow. I’ve yet to get a hold of Toni, which sucks. I also haven’t met up with Russ yet. Hopefully soon.
Classes are alright. CSE 23 is going smoothly. We have a project due a week from today, and I’m not done of course. But I think it’ll go fine. CSE 31L is a breeze but annoying. The lecture’s useless. The lab is crap because it’s 8-11 two days a week, and I don’t think it’s that important. The TA hardly helps, but we have to have her see our project before we turn it in or do the lab write-up. However, she didn’t mark anything down so maybe I can stop going. We use a language called VHDL to simulate hardware. It’s pretty cool I guess. Classics 45A, a mythology class, is interesting but has a lot of reading. I’m pretty far behind already. Music 78A, history of jazz, is also pretty cool. I have no idea how it’ll go though. Should be fun regardless.
gem is in all the same classes as me except she’s in 31 rather than 31L. However, due to an error people who hasn’t taken 31 were allowed into 31L. Only a handful of students in my 31L class had actually taken 31 so the teacher’s making in easier. Because of this, gemma might join my class there as well. But as of now, she has schedule conflicts.
Okay, that’s all.

Midterms

Two midterms down, but one still to go. I got a 22/25 on my CSE31 (intro to digital systems) midterm, with an average of 17.5, and a 65/70 on my Math 6A (discrete math) midterm, with an average of 48.3 and a high of 66. Now I just gotta worry about the psych test.

CSE 22 Project 5

Fucked up a little.
Correctness: 9
*) Your program is well done. It passed all the tests. The only thing is
that there are always more spaces than necessary in your output.
Style:10
+) Good quality!
+) Naming and comments are proper.
+) Program is neat and clean
+) Program is well organized.
+) You way to handle the ArrayList of RightHandSide is good: to generate a
new class which is the super class of Variable and Terminal. But you can use
generable also.
+) Good you tell the user that the output is finished.
+) Good you also considered exceptions

CSE 22 Project 4

Correctness: 10
+) Very well done. program passed all the tests!
Style: 10
+) Nice interface, correct and clear.
+) All operations are done in a proper class, i.e. within the scope of the
corresponding class.
+) Proper comments and proper naming.
+) Program is well organized!

ICS 22 Project 4

Wow, that sucked. I turned it in at 11:58 and didn’t finish commenting. I had a lot of trouble interpreting the instructions. When time came down to, I just grabbed a working bundle of source and turned it in. I had multiple ones, and while some seemed better code-wise, all but one gave different outputs than that on the website.
The one I turned in first checked if customers should be added to the lines and if so, added them. Then, for each window it did the following checked if there was a customer at the window. If so, it processed him or her. If not, it would move someone from the line into the window. I don’t know if it was right or not.
I did, however, become happy with my clock. If I pass around an int to keep track of time, methods could change it. If I make a clock object with a private int to keep track of time, a public method to change the time, and a public method to retrieve the time, any method could still change the time. So, I made a Clock class with the field/methods described above. Then, I made a ClockView interface that was the same except didn’t have the method to change the time. In Simulation, I did the following:
Clock clock = new Clock();
ClockView clockView = clock;
Now, using the clock reference I could change the time. If I pass the clockView reference to other methods, they can view the time but not change it. Yay!
We’ll see how I actually do.

CSE 22 Project 3

Booya.
Correctness: 10
+) Very well done! You have passed all the tests.
Style: 10
-) When you report a fatal error, it is better to give the line number at
the same time
+) Coding is very clear and well structured.
+) You have handled the execution loop very nicely by having a “keepRunning”
variable in the programState class.
+) Good you have proper comments to give enough information about the
methods.
+) Naming of classes, methods and variables is good.
+) Good you have all fields private.
+) Nice quality of coding.

Linear Algebra Midterm

I got my Math 2J midterm score today. Once again, ditching a shitload of class is fine. I got a 52/60. The highest was 58 and lowest 6 with an average of 35.6. Only 5 people got between 52 and 58. ^_^

Weekend

The weekend’s here.
This week was so full of school work. It really sucked. Patrick said when he saw me, I looked like I wanted to kill myself. The linear algebra midterm went alright. If everything I thought I got right was right and everything I guessed on was wrong, I’ll get an 80%. The instructor doesn’t know if he’s gonna curve it yet. I missed Live Nude People last night. First time I’ve missed one since I started going. I didn’t think it would work, but we tried to go late. It was packed, and it didn’t work. I watched Garden State in Gondolin”s common room instead. I’m glad I had seen it before. People kept talking during parts. That’s why only repetitive stupid comedies should be watched in common rooms. I spent the night at Gem’s. Now I’m up early because she had to wake up to go somewhere. Now though, the week is nice and over.
